Scientists have been studying happiness, asking basic questions like what makes people smile, laugh, and feel good? In terms of a location, they’ve discovered that the qualities of place, community, and opportunity have a profound effect on how we feel about our lives. According to National Geographic Explorer and Dan Buettnerauthor of the new book, The Blue Zones of Happiness, our region has joined a very happy collection of 20 communities across the Unites States. North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton has been ranked #14 in the list of very happy communities, where according to Buettner, “locals smile and laugh more often, socialize several hours a day, have access to green spaces, and feel that they are making purposeful progress toward achieving life goals.”
